SULLIVAN - The rapidly moving line of thunderstorms that downed trees and power lines from Taylorville to Charleston on Monday afternoon may only be the beginning.
Llyle Barker, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Lincoln, said he looked for a similar pattern to continue through the end of the day Wednesday.
"These storms are associated with heavy rainfall but they move so quickly they dump only about an inch on any given location," he said.
Packing winds up to 70 mph and moving about 45 mph, the storms hit the Taylorville area shortly after 1 p.m., knocking out power to thousands of homes. Ameren Illinois reported 2,495 customers without electricity at 4:30 p.m. but just 943 in Christian County by 9 p.m.
The storms later hit Moultrie County, and apparently to a lesser extent Shelby County, about 2 p.m.
Phil Ozier of Bethany-based Ozier Tree Service said he saw a lot of roof damage in Sullivan, including a building on the south side of the square and to Agri-Fab. The resulting power outages forced the Little Theatre-On The Square to postpone a preview of "Annie" to Wednesday.
