It’s a parent’s worst nightmare: Hearing a diagnosis that your baby has a terrifying disease.
This is the nightmare Nic and Shelsie Ballew are living right now. A week ago, they heard dreaded words: their 10-month-old son, Kaedyn, has leukemia.
Kaedyn is in Gainesville at Shands at UF undergoing treatment for tumors in his kidneys, liver and pancreas, according to an almost hour-by-hour blog by family members in vigil at the hospital.
To make matters worse, Nic Ballew recently switched jobs, and health insurance for his family hadn’t kicked in yet when this ordeal began.
Moreover, Kaedyn apparently needs a steady supply of fresh A-negative blood, according to the family’s blogs.
So friends and co-workers here in Ocala are rallying to the aid of the family. On Saturday between noon and 3 p.m. — or longer if needed – the staff at the WingHouse of Ocala, 2145 E. Silver Springs Blvd., is holding what’s being called a ”bikini car wash” and blood drive.
