Former bank executive embezzled for years
At the time, his employer, bank President Lawrence McGoldrick , praised Nixon's experience and dedication. What McGoldrick and other coworkers didn't know then is that Nixon had been embezzling from the bank for a year and would continue to do so for the next eight years.
"This is absolutely unbelievable," McGoldrick said after Nixon's guilty plea last week in U.S. District Court in New Haven. "I can't tell you how shocked I am. When you worked with somebody as long as I worked with Bob, I never would have guessed he would do something like this."
Nixon, 48, of East Haven, pleaded guilty Friday to embezzling more than $1 million while working at the bank from 2000 to 2008 and to one count each of theft, embezzlement or misapplication by a bank officer or employee and income tax evasion.
The bank merged with Naugatuck Savings Bank in 2009 and Nixon's position was eliminated soon afterward, said Mark Yanarella, president of Naugatuck Savings Bank. The theft was discovered after his departure.
