Founded in Rhode Island over a century ago, Amica started out offering discount commercial insurance to well-maintained, modern factories. Founder Adolph T. Vigneron believed that the same principles could be applied to personal automobile coverage – though at the time Amica began offering the first auto policies in 1914, few Americans actually owned cars. Henry Ford’s low-priced Model T had only been on the market a few years and still cost the equivalent of over $20,000 in today’s dollars, while most other cars were considerably more expensive.Nonetheless, the company paved the way for other insurers, who rushed into the market when automobile ownership became much more common after 1920; Massachusetts (where Amica eventually opened its first branch) became the first state to pass mandatory auto insurance laws in 1927.
While Amica does not offer the lowest cost auto insurance, it has been a favorite of consumers since 1999, due to its superior level of customer service.
