Which is worse, the LIRR or the NYC subway?
They are both part of the MTA, which is run by buffoons who skim their own salaries off the top. If the Long Islanders had had a complete shutdown the last two days, millions of productive hours of work would have been lost -- there is no other option for getting to work in NYC if you don't have a car!
So if the city and state are really serious about getting cars out of Manhattan, saving our lives from fumes, etc. we need to get people onto the railroads, subways, buses. To do that, we need more public transit, not less, and it must be cheaper and have parking access at railroad stations. People will take transit if it is reliable, accessible, and affordable. Accessibility is a serious problem as there is little parking at suburban stations, and recently reliability and frequency have been cut. If lack of affordability is added to those with a 50% increase in fares, then only GM and Ford will be happy all the way to the bank as we all die from air pollution.
Please make more parking access to the RR, fix the old infrastructure (which would provide new jobs for a long time!!!!), LOWER the fares, and raise the tolls, so more people will use the system instead of cars. And by the way, if motor bikes and bicycles are part of the mix, make sure they obey traffic laws, or people will be killed by them or trying to avoid them. Registration of all vehicles (including bikes) and enforcement of surface vehicular and public transit -- then we will have a safe and accessible city.
